On My Radar: Sudden Youth by Lea Black

I have a confession to make - I am completely obsessed with skincare and anti-aging products. Don't get me wrong, I am all for aging gracefully, but I am a big believer in being pro-active about skincare. I love discovering products that blow me away. When I do, I share the wealth. You can thank me later.

On my radar is Sudden Youth by Lea Black of the Real Housewives of Miami. First, I must say that I have seen Lea in person, and the woman has phenomenal skin. I definitely wanted in on her secret. As it turns out, Lea created Sudden Youth in 1981 and has been using it since. She is currently relaunching the line.

What do I love about Sudden Youth? First, is the line's purpose and intention. The Sudden Youth philosophy is beauty from the inside out, and I believe wholeheartedly that how we feel on the inside shows on our face. Sudden Youth's doctrine is that great skin comes from spiritual nourishment as much as physical; meaning protecting one's self from people that can become toxins in our lives, our reconciliation of unfulfilled dreams, or failing to take time out to honor self. Stress, anger, and resentment are toxic for your complexion - this I know for sure.

If I am putting something on my face, I have to trust where it comes from and believe that there will be results. Honestly, there is an over-saturation of skincare products on the market and many do not live up to the hype. I have learned not to dismiss a product just because it’s not tied to a super brand. Sudden Youth absolutely gets my stamp of approval.

Style vs. Individuality?

Style and individuality have been on my mind quite a bit lately. When I look through some personal style blogs, I see a lot of the same thing. We look to celebrities for style inspiration, but certain celebs can not put on a shoe without a stylist and the entourage’s approval. Has individuality in personal style lost its way?

Earlier this week, I read a great post by Tyra Banks on fashion choices, risk, and the "Worst Dressed" list. Tyra thinks the list should be renamed the “We Don’t Get It” list and landing on it is not always a bad thing. Tyra used Tilda Swinton as an example. Most people in the fashion community love Tilda's avant-garde style, but she is definitely not the typical "Hollywood" star. Does she change to be “main stream”? Absolutely not. When it comes to fashion choices and style, you have to be fearless and yourself.

Quick story: Four or five years ago I was in Vegas and I decided to wear a pair of silk shorts paired with a cute top and heels out to a club (this was before shorts were on trend.) A guy in the group I was with said loudly to everyone “why is she wearing shorts to a club? She looks dumb.” Ouch. But, I got the last laugh. While on a visit to Miami last year, I was out at a club with the same group and every other girl had shorts on. See, sometimes people do not get it, but that should not stop you from taking style risks and being an individual.

Getting inspiration from blogs and celebs is one thing, losing yourself in the hype, is quite another. When it comes to style, I always think of my favorite quote by Nina Garcia, "Fashion means knowing who you are and what you love. Be confident in your clothing selections and more importantly have confidence in yourself."

On My Radar: FemmeScience Skin Care

Last fall, I received samples from FemmeScience, a Miami-based skin care company. In all honesty, they sat in a drawer for a ridiculously long time. In June, I came across the samples and decided to give them a try. Guess what? I loved the products. Normally, I do not try unknown skin creams (i.e. reason why it sat in a drawer for seven months), but I am glad I ventured past my favorites and tried something new.

The FemmeScience products I tried were the Revitalizing Body Polish, Body Cream, Under Eye Renewal, and the Night Cream. Each was perfection in a bottle; from the smell to how it went on the skin. The body polish and body cream left my skin ultra soft. I have dry and sensitive skin, so finding good creams is tricky. The body polish is a gentle exfoliant, so it is not too drying. The ingredients in FemmeScience are another part of the appeal. For example, the Night Cream contains: Acai, Avocado, Shea Butter, Glycerin, Green Tea, Squalene, Peptides, Hyaluronic Acid, Vitamins A, C, E. They have a green tea mask that I can not wait to try.

The Beauty In Strength: Nike's "Make Yourself" Campaign By Annie Leibovitz

Let me tell you a little secret...in high school I was a tomboy. Shocking, I know. I played soccer, track, cross-country, and lived in ponytails and flip flops. Even though I wear a lot more make up and have far better style than I did back then, one thing hasn't changed - my respect for athletes. I came across these Annie Leibovtiz photos for Nike's "Make Yourself" campaign, and I was in awe. In usual Annie style, she captured beautiful shots of these ladies doing what they love.
This campaign shows beauty in strength of the body, mind, and heart. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to reach the level these women are at professionally. They are truly inspiring.

Jewelry Obsession: Snake Rings

For the last couple of months, I have been obsessed with snake rings. This is not my first time in a snake phase, but it has been a while since I wear any kind of animal on my fingers. Maybe it has to do with the fact that snake print is popping up everywhere. This fall we will see a lot snake, from clothing to jewelry. Right now, I can not get enough of rings.
Above is a gorgeous Rachel Roy double finger ring that comes in different colors. Roberto Cavalli and Max & Chloe have rings that are lovely.
Below is my recent snake ring purchase, which I found at an antique shop. It is simple and I love that it fits my unusually large middle finger.

Style File: Print Pants

Lately, I have been involved in a serious love affair with print pants. What started as piqued interest in an all-over-the-runway trend in February, has avalanched into a full-blown obsession. As a girl who usually leans towards solid-colored bottoms, I have surprised myself with this need for print pants. Recently, I heard a woman describe herself as colorful on the inside, and she wanted her wardrobe and style to reflect that. There is no better way to do that then with a great pair of print pants.

Dries Van Noten first brought print pants to my attention in their Spring 2010 collection. This past February, designers like Céline, Giambattista Valli, Rachel Roy, and Rebecca Minkoff all had various styles of print pants. This trend continued in Resort and has picked up momentum for fall.

Since February, the pants Céline showed on the runway have been on every style blog. Selby Drummond (below), the Accessories Editor at Vogue, recently featured the pants in the 5 Days 5 Looks 1 Girl post. I love how she styled this look. She says that playing with fashion and experimenting is part of the fun. I agree.

Haute Living Magazine: Eva Longoria in The Garden of Rapture

This morning, I received a preview of the July issue of Haute Living Magazine featuring the gorgeous Eva Longoria in a sultry fashion editorial. I do not usually write about editorials, but this one caught my attention, and I love the digital aspect of it. Creative Director Gerard Bush, from the innovative brpr Group in Miami, brings a fresh point of view to the magazine. Pair Bush with photographer Greg Lotus, and the results are breathtaking.

The digital short of the editorial provides a whole other dimension to Eva and the clothes. Gerard Bush and The brpr Group team are known for creating great digital content for fashion brands and magazines. The brpr Group and The Haute Living team did a phenomenal job.

What Eva wore? Lanvin, Yves Saint Laurent, Alexander McQueen, Hakaan, and Antonio Berardi. The Lanvin skirt and YSL vest (above) is my favorite look. The Haute Living Fashion Director is Jilian Sanz.

On Exhibit: Daphne Guinness

Earlier this week NOWNESS posted this video footage by documentary filmmaker Brennan Stasiewicz. The video is an intimate look at fashion darling Daphne Guinness. What I find the most fascinating about Daphne, is that in contrast to her bold style, she is soft spoken and shy. Her vulnerability is obvious when she speaks and it is the opposite of what you expect from her. Daphne uses fashion as art and expression in a beautiful way. She is fascinating and in September the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York will put Daphne's iconic style on exhibit.
Daphne Guinness at The Museum at FIT opens September 16, 2011 and on view through January 7, 2012. The exhibition will feature approximately 100 garments and accessories from Daphne’s personal collection, plus films, videos, and images, of and by her.

Summer is almost here, I can smell it. Even though Mother Nature has been rather moody, we are in the final stretch. Can you say fun in the sun?
There are a few things that are my absolute must-haves for this summer. First, lets talk beauty.
My must-have for sun-kissed shimmering skin: Loreal Sublime Bronze.

Braziliant nails. This spring my nails have stayed a purplish/grey color called Commander in Chic. I think I chose it just for the name, but it is time to go bright.
Essie's latest collection is called Braziliant, how great is that name? I am obsessed with Super Bossa Nova.

Bag me baby. Summer is all about bright bags.

Wedged In. Classic nude wooden wedges are a must-have for summer. They can be worn with anything and will be current season after season. Love these budget-friendly Steve Madden wedges:

Skirting around. This spring was all about pleated maxi skirts, but for the summer the hem line shrinks.

Eyewear. Last, but not least, is eyewear. There are only a few things that I love more than my Micheal Kors aviators. They are so comfortable and absolutely essential for beautiful sunny days.

Style Inspiration: Swimwear

Summer is almost here and that means one thing, it's time to shop for bathing suits. This season 40's and 50's style swimwear is everywhere. As someone who grew up in Miami, where the philosophy on bathing suits is the smaller the better, I like this resurgence of elegant swimwear. Sexy does not mean the more skin the better, in my opinion. Case and point, this Anthropologie line pictured here. All of these bathing suits are sexy, have personality, and are great for various body types.
It is important to invest in swimwear that you feel confident and comfortable in.

All the suits are gorgeous, a little pricey, but they are great investment and if nothing else, inspiration.

Aging Gracefully: Vivienne Westwood and Grace Coddington

Two of my favorite fiery redheads in the fashion industry, Vivienne Westwood and Grace Coddington, have milestone birthdays this month, both turn 70. Each has given their heart and soul to the fashion industry for close to five decades. I have always admired these two women for so many reasons, but what I think of most, is the fact that both women live life on their terms. I am grateful for their example and the lessons they represent.

What can be said about Vivienne Westwood that hasn't been said before? She is the Queen to some, outrageous to others, and a genius to many. She moves me. Vivienne Westwood is passionate about everything that is important to her and I admire that. Anyone who encourages people to love art and to believe that culture can save the world, is my kind of girl.

Grace Coddington once said “Fashion isn’t just frocks, it’s how we do our houses, our gardens, it’s what we eat and drink.” I agree, style is stitched into our being, whether we know it or not. Grace is a genius, as Anna Wintour says, and there will never be another Grace. If I could pick anyone in the fashion industry to be my fashion fairy Godmother, I would pick Grace. Behind her quiet and shy demeanor is a women full of imagination, wisdom, and love. I can not imagine Vogue or the fashion world without her. Happy Birthday, Grace.

Style Therapy: A Tale of Fashion Love & Hate

My grandmother loved bold print and her kitchen.

When I was in elementary school, my grandmother would pick me up after school and we would go shopping. She would shop at a mix of high and low stores; one day TJ Maxx and the next day Bloomingdales or Saks. I looked forward to these outings like a kid going to FAO Schwartz or Toys R Us. My grandmother’s search for clothes and the best sales was a process that I loved. She was a major fashionista, but as a mother of four knew how to shop without getting her credit cards cut by my grandfather. She did not believe in paying retail for anything, and to her everything was negotiable. Her negotiation skills were second to none. After shopping and homework, I spent hours in her closet playing dress up and flipping through fashion magazines. These fashion adventures with my grandmother were thrilling and the cornerstone of my childhood.

My grandmother took her animal print very seriously.

During my first year of junior high or middle school, whatever it's called now, my grandparents moved to another city and our fashion adventures ended. On a subconscious level that made me turn my back on fashion. I started to hate going shopping and fashion became a chore. I stopped caring about my style. By the time I was in high school the grunge era swept in with its flannel button downs, dirty hair, and Kate Moss with her waif figure as the "it" girl in fashion. If I was disconnected from fashion before, this made a dent like the Grand Canyon. As a teen battling body image issues, I resented Kate's waif image. It had happened; I hated the fashion industry and my long lost friend, shopping.

By the time I was nineteen or twenty, I finally rekindled my love affair with fashion. Like an awakening of sorts, I appreciated the artistry in fashion. I had outgrown the need to harp on the rail thin models in high fashion. I understood the value of quality fabrics, tailoring, and the theory “you get what you pay for.” It finally sunk in that even though some designer items were way out of my price range, I could use them for inspiration. After all, my grandmother taught me how to shop and I can put together a fantastic wardrobe for under what some people pay for a handbag. Fashion and shopping had become fun again. Soon, I had my subscriptions to Vogue and Harper's Bazaar and I have been a proud fashionista ever since.

This was the last thing I read to my grandmother; the April 2010 issue of Vogue.

On the 9th of this month it will be the one year anniversary of my grandmother’s passing. When I started this blog she was the first person that I thought of. She would love the democratic movement fashion has taken. She would have been over the moon to see a fashion show live stream. Online sample sites like Gilt would have knocked her socks off. There are so many things I am grateful to my grandmother for, but I will always cherish three things she gave me; the love of fashion, art, and New York City.

Individual Style

Living life on our own terms is something we always hear, but sometimes it’s easier said than done. People-pleasing is something we (or I) tend to do without even noticing. What to wear? Who to date? What career to choose? All of these fall victim to the people-pleasing disease. It’s when you look back at choices and consequences that you can see where you gave up your individuality. Society, the expectations placed by it, along with the need to be accepted or liked, are powerful motivators that can make you second guess or change who you are.
Yesterday, I read the April Vogue issue with Rihanna, which by the way has amazing photos (some of which I included), and I loved what she had to say in the article. Rihanna likes the word unapologetic to describe herself and says there is freedom in not having to make excuses for being herself. Growing up in the limelight, like she has, and being pegged a “role model” can be crazy for anyone, especially a teen. Talk about feeling the need to people-please in a major way. Rihanna says of being a role model “I have come to the conclusion that I can only live my life for me.” I love that. As long as she is living her truth and learning the lessons circumstances teach her, be unapologetic. All that can become of a life built around what others think, in my opinion, is misery.

We all have to find ourselves and learn to be comfortable in our own skin; it is part of life. Like with fashion, we all experiment with styles and go through phases to see what “fits,” make sure your life fits you like a glove. Nothing would be more tragic than looking back in ten or twenty years and wishing you were more fearless and had done things differently. That advice is for both for life and fashion choices.

Irene Marie: From Model Mogul to Handbag Designer

Recently, I had a chat with Irene Marie, the South Beach modeling agency mogul, about life after the agency and her venture into designing handbags. As a Miami native, I know first hand how devastating the closing of the Irene Marie agency was. My heart broke for her. Now, she has designed a handbag line called Angel Bags that was inspired by the angels that got her through a difficult time in her life.

FlauntStyle: How did designing handbags come about? Was it something you always wanted to do?
IreneMarie: Getting into the handbag industry was never something that I planned or intended on doing. It was more of a creative outlet. After the agency closed, I was moved to make a red handbag from a feathered bag that was already in my closet. The reason for making it had a special meaning to me and the end result was a conversation starting handbag. I named it the Angel Bag. Everywhere I went people asked me about the bag.
FS: How did you go from a personal project to launching a line?
IM: A close family friend suggested I show a few handbags at a women's conference that was coming up. She has a jewelry business and had a booth at the conference, so I made bags to show and they were a hit. That proved to me that I was on to something.
FS: Then in July 2010 you launched the line at Mercedes Benz Swim Week?
IM: Yes. I have been fortunate to have a lot of supporters and interest in the bags. I am having fun with it.
FS: These bags are handmade completely by you, correct?
IM: Yes. I design each bag, select the materials, and create them by hand. They are made out of precious materials, so the process is tedious.
FS: Each bag is unique. What inspires you?
IM: Well, I have four daughters, so they are a great source of inspiration. The idea for a hobo bag, which I am working on now, was my daughter's idea. Each of my daughters has helped me at one point or other with the launch of the line.
FS: I love that. I know family is important to you, so involving your daughters must be wonderful.
IM: It is. Working on the handbags has been a labor of love.
FS: You had to completely switch gears and re-brand yourself after the agency closed. What has been the biggest challenge for you?
IM: The biggest challenge was closing the agency. I was in business for 30 years and had to let go of people that had become my family. This part of my life is different and challenging, but closing my business was the hardest thing I've ever done. Starting over is something I am still getting used to.
FS: What would you say to someone who is going through a life-changing situation or difficult transition in their life?
IM: Sometimes it is best to just allow yourself to go through the emotions of what ever you are feeling and eventually you will come out the other side. Allow yourself to grieve. Everything will work out.

Irene Marie is a remarkable woman and an inspiration. Many people are in the position Irene Marie is in, closing a business due to the economy and starting over. Life has chapters and this is her next chapter. I look forward to seeing what else is in store for Irene Marie.

Celeb Style Inspiration

Two of the best looks I have seen in the last week come from celebs that are under 21 years old. I never covet their style due to the fact they are way younger than me, but these two outfits are divine and styled exactly how I would wear them. This season I am strategically mixing menswear with ultra feminine touches. These two looks are perfect examples.
Emma Watson looks amazing in this ensemble. She is on set for a Lancome shoot in Paris, so it was styled and done so impeccably. The details are perfect; the black lose bow-tie, the color of the blazer, and the great lace shorts. To add extra drool worthiness she is in Brian Atwood Zenith pumps, simply gorgeous. Since I am 5'10 and I do not shy away from showing some serious leg, I love the shorts. This is a great weekend outfit. If shorts are not your thing, you might like Selena's look below.

Selena Gomez looks polished and smoldering in this black tapered leg pant suit with the gorgeous cotton corset top. Frankly, it is the corset that makes this look. I love it! A corset paired with a blazer is a classic look that stands the test of trends. Her hair, simple jewelry, and contageous smile add the perfect finishing touches.

On My Radar: Japan Relief T-Shirt by Tory Burch

The above design was part of a Tory Burch blog post last week on Japan relief information. I immediately thought that it would be a great design for a relief t-shirt - like the CFDA Haiti relief tee last year.
Well, Tory Burch must have been listening to my thoughts because she was on The View today wearing the tee and will be selling them for Japan relief. 100% of the proceeds will go to the American Red Cross.
Pre-orders are being taken now and will ship soon. The t-shirt will sell through September 15, 2011 on the Tory Burch website.

Dreaming BIG + 5 Steps To Achieve Your Dreams

Do you know why I love Katy Perry? It's not just her music or her style, it is her drive and never-give-up attitude that I really love. When I first read her story, I was impressed. Katy never stopped pursuing her dream, even when all the doors shut in her face. For seven years, set-back after set-back, did not stop her. By the time her first hit I Kissed a Girl was released, Katy had been dropped by three record labels and was broke. At one point the girl was almost homeless for crying out loud.
I think a lot of people think that they can be successful overnight, and that is just not so. It takes a lot of hard work and discipline.

Katy's “never-give-up” and “be yourself” attitude is clear in the song Firework, which I love. Below is the part of the song that we all should be singing in the bathroom mirror:

                    You're original, cannot be replaced
                    If you only knew what the future holds
                    After a hurricane comes a rainbow

                    Maybe you're reason why all the doors are closed
                    So you could open one that leads you to the perfect road

We all need to be reminded that we are individuals and have something special to bring to this life. Our dreams are important. Katy Perry is a great example of knowing your purpose and never giving up.

Below are 5 steps I follow to reach goals/dreams. I highly recommend them:

1. Clarify your purpose: Why? By clarify I mean, focus on what drives you, lights a fire in the pit
    of your belly, and brings you pure joy. Why is it your goal or purpose?

2. Listen to your gut. You are your best source and guide in all things. We all have an inner voice.
    Listen. Sit quietly. Be clear when making decision. There are no little choices.

3. Write down goals. Feel yourself there. Feel the situation. Picture yourself doing what you love or
    having reached that goal.

4. Do one thing everyday, even if it is a small thing, to bring you closer to your dream/goals.

5. Never give up. Sometimes your goals change or circumstances make that dream seem impossible.
    Do not be afraid of failure or set-backs. In every set-back there is a lesson. Look for the lesson.
    Stay the course. NEVER give up.

In My Life

This week has been a little crazy. I have not been able to post as much as usual.
I did want to share the incredibly amazing Beatles song, In My Life. It has been on my mind all week. The song reminds me that all the beauty of life lies in the simple things. There is nothing more important then the people in your life and the love and lessons they show you.

Oscars 2011: Fashion Favorites

The 2011 Academy Awards had some awkward moments, but the fashion did not disappoint. There were a lot of great gowns, and some celebs (that shall remain nameless) that usually miss the mark, actually pulled off fabulous looks. To my surprise, there was not one look that I totally hated. From the red carpet to Anne Hathaway's seven wardrobe changes, there was plenty of drool worthy fashion. Speaking of Anne, Rachel Zoe did a bang out job styling Hathaway. From hair to shoes, Anne's wardrobe changes made the hosting dull moments tolerable.

Back to the red carpet. I was looking forward to seeing Hailee Steinfeld from True Grit. Hailee has been spot on this red carpet season. She is so young, yet has a keen sense as to what will work for her. Hailee was in a custom made Marchesa dress that she helped design. Hailee told E! that when she found out she was nominated for an Oscar she sketched a dress, and Marchesa helped bring that to life. Hailee is only 14, but carries herself better than most adults. Love that!

Another celeb I was looking forward to seeing was Sandra Bullock. She was a bit off at the Golden Globes, but redeemed herself at the Oscars in a stunning red Vera Wang gown. The cut and color of the dress suited her flawlessly. I did not like her big dark red clutch, but the hair and simple jewels were perfection. I want this dress!

Color. Color. Color. Lately, I have spotted every color in the rainbow on the bottom half of an ensemble, and I must admit, I love it. When I saw the photo of Rachel Bilson (above) in those purple pants, I was giddy. The shade of purple is perfect and she styled it just right...well she is Rachel Bilson.

As much as I love seeing red jeans everywhere (because I really do), it was lovely to see a different color.

Recently, I was introduced to the Mikkat Market through a post by blogger extraordinaire Man Repeller. It was love at first click. Mikkat Market is an online boutique that offers edgy modern pieces at budget friendly prices. On top of selling great stuff, Kat (the boutique owner) offers style inspiration by putting together outfits with the pieces she sells. Hello! The girl has style, and her outfits makes me want to buy every piece.

About the designer: Alexandra Satine is a New York based handbag designer that is originally from Venezuela. The brand is still up and coming, but I have no doubt we will be seeing more of Alexandra Satine Handbags.

Spring Style: In the Trenches

What I have noticed about trench dresses is that you either love them or hate them. I fall into the love category, especially when it comes to the three dresses above. From the left: Rachel Rachel Roy, Rag & Bone, and DKNY. I love the added sash and the unexpected back of the DKNY dress, and the black gives the dress an edge. All three dresses could pull double duty, and go from work-wear to happy hour. It is a no brainer, a great dress that works for you and looks great. What more can you ask for?

Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty

When I heard that there is going to be an Alexander McQueen exhibition at the Costume Institute at the Met, I was thrilled, to say the least. McQueen was a phenomenal talent, and he brought an originality and showmanship to fashion that is truly missed.
The exhibition, titled Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty, will run from May 4 to July 31st. The exhibit will feature 100 garments and will span McQueen's 19 year career. I can not wait to see this exhibition.

Over the last year there has been a mainstream resurgence of maxi skirts, primarily pleated and sheer skirts. This year the trend continued on the runway, and it seems the maxi skirt is all over the street. At New York Fashion Week the long skirts were everywhere, even Bill Cunnigham from the NY Times took notice. Sheer and flowing is the main style out on the street and on the runway.

Without a doubt, Alejandro Ingelmo is one of my favorite shoe designers. His shoes never fail to make my heart beat fast. Last week was the fall 2011 presentation at his store in Soho and he did not disappoint. I am a little late writing this, but I had to share. Better late than never.

Alejandro likes to describe his shoes as sexy, architectural and forward, and they are definitely all three. The Miami native - which might be another reason I love him - tried some new things with leather for fall and it paid off. The shoes are amazing.

On My Radar: Fatigues to Fabulous Launch

Did you know there are 1.8 million women who have served in the armed forces? That is an incredibly large number of daughters, mothers, sisters and wives that need our support. Grace After Fire and the Society for Women's Health Research have teamed up with the fashion industry to create awareness surrounding the daunting issues female veterans face returning to civilian life. Fatigues to Fabulous is a national program, which besides creating awareness and offering outreach, will help women with transitioning from fatigues to a civilian wardrobe that will boost their confidence.
Fatigues to Fabulous launched Tuesday as part of Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. DKNYC, the Donna Karan line, has designed a stylish watch as a symbol of appreciation that will be sold exclusively on HSN. Fashionably Social: Tory Burch

Tory Burch, as a brand, is forward-thinking when it comes to social media; creating a phenomenal blog, supporting bloggers, and understanding how to engage genuinely with followers on twitter and facebook . The brand began the blog three years ago, and had the forethought to bring on an editor that would create unique content, not just push Tory Burch products. It is through their incredible social media presence that I have gained more interest in the brand and the products. Tory Burch makes beautiful things - so do other designers - but loyalty to a brand is what makes someone choose to purchase products. Developing a genuine connection with consumers through social media is priceless. Numerous brands use social media, but not as many get the value of using social media to build brand loyalty in an authentic way. Tory Burch gets it.

Last week Tory Burch was a key-note speaker at the Lucky FABB (Fashion & Beauty Bloggers) conference which was part of Social Media Week, and she discussed the relevance of bloggers and delving into social media (See video).

Sunday morning Victoria Beckham showed her sixth collection at New York Fashion Week, in a slightly larger space, but still in her usual manner. Victoria Beckham likes to describe her designs as they go down the runway, bringing a personal touch to the show and giving insight to the attendees. I love what Nina Garcia from Marie Claire had to say about Victoria and the show, "Happy to see Victoria Beckham glowing with motherhood! I love her. She showed a strong, streamlined colorful and sophisticated collection of dresses. She also did a brilliant collaboration with Christian Louboutin and turned out the most chic & perfect boots for Fall. Victoria is a true perfectionist and everything she does is very thorough an passionate. Enjoy so much her designs.” Victoria's designs are getting stronger by the season and her confidence is coming through in each piece. I always look forward to her collections.
In addition to the brilliant showing this morning, the Telegraph is reporting that Kate Middleton has requested dresses from VB's current spring/summer line. Kate Middleton obviously has great taste.

Today the New York Fashion Week shows that I loved were: Jason Wu, Rebecca Minkoff and Nicole Miller. For Rebecca Minkoff it was her first Mercedes Benz NYFW, and it seems the theme was go big or go home. Minkoff pulled out all the stops, including having Sean Lennon and her muse Charlotte Kemp Muhl perform live.

New York Fashion Week F/W 2011 Day 1: Vena Cava & Luca Luca with Pamela Love Jewelry

Today kicked off New York Fashion Week, and of course, I am beyond excited. This morning, I was able to catch the BCBGMaxazria show, shortly thereafterVena Cava, and in the afternoon Luca Luca.
Vena Cava tapped the 90's as inspiration for their fall collection, and having grown up in the 90's, I did not mind reminiscing. BCBG was all about long skirts, silk dresses and jumpsuits over sheer white turtlenecks, and belts slung low to the hip. Luca Luca showed a colorful collection that was paired with Pamela Love jewelry. As a fan of both, Luca Luca and Pamela Love, this show was incredibly exciting.

Rachel Roy continuously amazes me with her creativity and ability to create such inspired collections. To be honest, when I think of Rachel Roy only clothing comes to mind, but in fact the Rachel Rachel Roy collection has gorgeous shoes and jewelry. The spring arrivals below are definite must-haves.

Rebecca Minkoff has included shoes into the mix of gorgeous handbags and apparel that she designs. The shoes are traffic stopping.

The High Cost of All Things Fake

Did you know that by purchasing counterfeit items (i.e. handbags or sunglasses) you are supporting child labor and trafficking, drug trafficking and even funding terrorist groups? The sales of counterfeit items rakes in over $600 billion a year worldwide. This is a criminal industry and needs to be stopped.

Harper's Bazaar started the Fakes Are Never In Fashion campaign five years ago in an attempt to bring awareness and ultimately stop the sales of counterfeit items. The numbers that the FANIF site reports are staggering:

$512 Billion Global sales lost to counterfeit goods.
$250 Billion Annual loss to American companies from intellectual property theft.
$20 Billion Estimated loss to American companies from counterfeit products.
$1 Billion Estimated annual loss in New York City tax revenues due to counterfeiting.
750,000 Number of jobs lost due to intellectual property theft in the United States.

In this economy it is understandable that people want to have a stylish luxury item for less, but the fact is the ultimate cost is not worth it. Last month the Harper's Bazaar blog posted a compelling statement, "Counterfeiting is not a victimless crime. We talk a lot about child labor and sweatshops that sew the counterfeit clothes and handbags or copy the counterfeit CDs and DVDs, but consumers can be victims as well. Fake beauty products contain chemicals that don’t abide by health and safety standards. Faux fragrance often contain bacteria, urine and antifreeze. Counterfeit clothes can even be made with toxic dyes. All of these pose a serious risk to a shopper’s health."

For The Love of Fashion? The Fashion Blogger Phenomenon

Recently the Editor-in-Chief of Vogue Italy, Franca Sozzani, posted her thoughts on the fashion blogger phenomenon on her blog. It was a devils advocate style post, questioning what contributions bloggers make to the fashion industry and whether fashion blogging will fade. The post was a little rough on bloggers, but I can understand why her point of view would be skeptical. Sozzani has been EIC at Vogue Italy since 1988 and it seems logical that she would question why certain fashion bloggers have landed in the front row at fashion shows and are in ad campaigns. This is a change that many longtime fashion industry pros are still getting used to, and still questioning. The fashion industry has always been exclusive and now blogging and social media have made it inclusive. At the end of her post Sozzani leaves the issue open ended, stating "Let’s wait a minute before acclaiming it or hating it. There are still a lot of people who don't know what blogger means, and none of us knows how it will evolve. It's still under observation."

Over the last couple years I have also questioned the fashion blogger phenomenon and what the ultimate impact bloggers will have on the fashion industry. The quality and types of fashion blogs vary immensely, and I think that over time there will not be such an over saturation of blogs. Personally, the blogs I think are genuinely good are well written and have a distinct point of view or provide information. A blog full of pictures of someones style is only impressive to a certain point (exactly what Sozzani mentioned). The influence a blogger has on their audience is tied to their content and genuine passion for what they post. That palpable enthusiasm is one reason fashion designers and brands have turned to bloggers in this viral world where social media is king. It makes sense, why not get as many fashion bloggers (that resonate with your brand) spreading the word about your clothes or products. It is a no-brainer. The blogger has the responsibility of staying true to themselves and their followers and not posting on brands merely because they are being given products or services. Readers can tell when there is authenticity behind a bloggers interest in a certain brand.
The reason I started this blog was the desire to combine my passion for writing, fashion, and the empowerment of women. Blogging has to come from a genuine desire to do it day in and day out, and not because a big paycheck may come or even fame. Do I sometimes get caught up in the numbers game, (how many followers do I have?) absolutely, but at the end of the day I would write about and research fashion even if no one read it.

Will fashion blogging fade? Absolutely not. The world is getting smaller with the use of social media and that will only continue to evolve. Sozzani questions bloggers being “qualified” to critique fashion, but since fashion has become inclusive, the truth is every single person has a distinct point of view that could be interesting to a reader somewhere in the world. Ultimately, brands and designers will continue to look to fashion bloggers for ideas, marketing, and revenue. The fashion blogging evolution will continue.

On My Radar: H&M Online Shopping, Bill Cunningham New York, and a DVF Home Makeover

On my radar this week are some exciting and anticipated events and releases. The first and possibly most exciting was the announcement by H&M on Twitter. The brand tweeted "H&M has decided to have online shopping in the US at the turn of the year 2011/2012! Stay tuned for more." All I can say is, finally!
Next on my radar is Bill Cunningham New York, a documentary on the 80 year old fashion photographer for the New York Times. For decades Bill Cunningham has been documenting the fashion musings of New Yorkers. I call him the original street style photographer. His images are captivating and he is nothing short of phenomenal. In the documentary Anna Wintour says "We all get dressed for Bill." and he is quoted as saying "I am not interested in celebrities with their free dresses, I am interested in fashion."

Last but certainly not least, is the DVF Home collection by Diane von Furstenburg set to be in stores this Spring. As one would expect from DVF, the collection is full of color and gorgeous patterns. Designer John Galliano outdid himself this year for the Christian Dior Spring Haute Couture show. My jaw had to be picked up several times while reviewing the looks. Dior is by far my favorite couture show this year at Paris Fashion Week.
The collection is a salute to the most iconic illustrator in fashion, Rene Gruau. In the forties and fifties Rene Gruau was one of the most well known and a favorite artist of the haute couture world.
Aside from the incredible artistry Galliano created with the clothing, the hair and make up were perfection. Orlando Pita's hair and Pat McGrath's make up added the icing, so to speak, to the haute cake.

Getting Social with DKNY

Monday night DKNY hosted the first ever live fashioncast on biglive.com, showing their Spring 2011 collection with added commentary by DKNY's twitter personality DKNY PR Girl. The event was an interactive fashion feast. The fashioncast brought the brand, the consumer, and social media together for the sake of fashion. I loved the idea of DKNY creating a dialogue with the consumer and bringing the fashion show to the fans in such a creative way. The biglive.com social media forum involves livecasts and chatrooms, so DKNY PR Girl chatted with viewers about the line and added tidbits of behind the scenes information. After the show DKNY offered viewers a discount code to be used on dkny.com towards a purchase from the spring line.
Before DKNY PR Girl became a Twitter phenomenon I was already a huge fan of Donna Karan and DKNY, but I honestly feel a deeper personal connection to the clothes and the brand now. Social media meets community, it is powerful!

Country Lovin'

This week I am visiting my mother in North Florida, which is completely removed from the hustle and bustle that I am used to, and I am loving it. All of a sudden I feel the need to ride horses and drive a truck. It is interesting that I have been here many times, but this trip I am enjoying the experience so much more. Why? Simply due to the fact that I am allowing myself to enjoy the change of pace. Living in the city and running a thousand miles an hour always felt like a major part of my identity, but as it turns out letting go and just being in this quiet place suits me perfectly. Lesson learned: Let go. Enjoy every minute right where you are.

Baby-oh-baby! It seems every other person I come in contact with is pregnant, not to mention the flood of celebrities sporting baby bumps. Speaking from experience, I know that maternity wear can be nauseating, but there are so many options when it comes to staying stylish and comfortable. The days of dull drum maternity clothes are no more. Below is some inspiration for great maternity style. Claudia Schiffer and Miranda Kerr nail these casual looks.

Penelope Cruz looks great in this camel coat and her accessories add the extra pop. Style maven Nina Garcia rocks this evening look. Her advice on maternity wear is to stick to flowy tops, tunics, and invest in great maternity jeans and pants. J Brand now carries maternity jeans.

Wednesday night Anna Wintour and Vera Wang attended the state dinner hosted by the President and First Lady Michelle Obama at the White House. Michelle Obama chose an Alexander McQueen gown for the occasion, a choice that reemphasizes her willingness to take risks and stay true to herself in terms of her style. Michelle was quoted as saying "If I can have an impact, I want women to feel good about themselves and have fun with fashion." I love that!

Style File: Casual Chic

As someone who works from home, runs around after children, and is a student, I understand the desire to have a casual wardrobe be as comfortable as possible without the frump. Oversized sweaters and sneakers should stay in the gym, that is my opinion. When asked about my style, I always suggest making a casual wardrobe simple, fun, and cost effective. My style is classic and I live in light layers, fitted dark wash or black denim, and boots or a great flat. Easy. The accessories are key and what brings out personality.
Vera Wang stated in a recent post on her blog that we all have a uniform, go-to pieces that we wear all the time that are our signature look. Lately my uniform has been black ultra skinny jeans, dark brown riding boots, and button down sweaters or jackets. What are your go-to pieces?
Below are some of my favorite looks that are chic, casual, and comfortable. Karlie Kloss and Rachel Bilson always have great casual style and they look sleek and pulled together.

Girl to Watch: Hailee Steinfeld

The 2011 Golden Globe awards had plenty of stunning gowns strolling down the red carpet, but I was most pleasantly surprised to see Hailee Steinfeld, the 14 year old True Grit actress, in a gorgeous Prabal Gurung gown. It is no surprise to me that she landed on Vogue's top 10 Best Dressed at the Golden Globes. The gown was a perfect choice for her.

Sunday was not Hailee's first great style moment on the red carpet, she wore a lovely Marchesa dress to the Critics' Choice Awards on Friday. From what I have seen of this young actress on the big screen and on the red carpet, there is definite long-term success on the horizon. She is most definitely a girl to watch.

Emmanuelle Alt Named French Vogue's New Leading Lady

When the news broke that Carine Roitfeld was stepping down as Editor-in-Chief of French Vogue, the first person who came to my mind as a possible replacement was Emmanuelle Alt. As the fashion director under Roitfeld she seemed like a perfect fit, and not only is her personal style beyond chic, Alt has been at French Vogue since 2000 and knows the ins and outs.
The magazine has been exceptionally successful under Roitfeld and Alt can definitely keep up that track record. French Vogue is very forward thinking and wishes to expand beyond covering fashion, so it will be an exciting new chapter.

Inspired by holiday outfit shopping on a budget, I decided to put together some of my favorite finds under $100. The items I pulled were inspired by high-end designer shoes and dresses that cost far more than a hundred dollars.

Pre-Fall 2011: Top Picks

This week designers began showing Pre-Fall 2011 collection's, and a few designers really brought their A game. Oscar de la Renta not only live streamed the show, but had a completely stunning collection (as expected). Every look was drool worthy. The colors used were spectacular, from sleek grey to bold fuchsia and brilliant green. These four looks were my favorites from de la Renta and choosing just four was not an easy task.

Donna Karan is synonymous with outstanding style and is the cornerstone of the confident, powerful, and sexy woman. The Donna Karan pre-fall collection included some "casual" looks that were nothing short of amazing.

Rag & Bone had a collection of great pieces that the designer's described as "clothes for a downtown girl." I am not big on long skirts, but I absolutely love this one.

Lost and Found

At the end of the year it is common to reflect on the year and ponder choices made (or not made). This is where I am now, reflecting and planning for the upcoming year. It is amazing how a person can get caught up in the stresses of life and forego the pursuit of a dream just to earn a paycheck. Well, that was my case this year. I am a writer and it is what drives me, plus my unconditional love of fashion writing is what prompted me to start this blog. In one fell swoop (or offer) I dropped my passion and moved to another state to take a job with a secure corporate paycheck. I suppose it is absolutely normal to feel the need for security especially if you are the sole provider in the home. However, with that being said, following your passion and living a life true to yourself is really the only recipe for success. My stint in the new city didn’t last long, and not because I came to the realization I was on the wrong path, but things just started falling apart. Random and strange things were happening and one night while tossing and turning it came to me, I was not where I was supposed to be. That reality was made painfully clear.
When I made the move I essentially had to abandon my blog due to lack of time. I went from one or two posts a day to none for almost five months. I now have to re-introduce my blog and essentially start from scratch, a process I am actually thoroughly enjoying. A quote from Kelly Cutrone’s book If You Have To Cry Go Outside keeps coming to mind, “Ultimately, if you are doing what you are meant to do – if you are in your truth – doors will open for you.” I completely agree and feel it in every stitch of my being that I am in my truth when I am writing.

What is your truth? Are you letting fears guide you in a different direction for security or to comply? My advice to you is to stop now. No one is ever truly successful following a paycheck. Getting started towards your dream is scary as hell, but take baby steps at first and before you know it you will be in full stride. I am the only one responsible for creating my best life for myself; no one ultimately has that responsibility. My former co-worker used to tell me, “get your big girl panties on and just do it”, and that is the best advice I received or could give.
Following my true passions and what makes me feel the most alive will always be an ongoing journey, but I’d like to think I am on going in the right direction, with my big girl panties on.

Two words come to mind when I think of the Oscar de la Renta Pre-Fall 2011 collection; absolutely stunning. My eyes were in runway heaven. Even though I expect amazingness from OdlR, I am still surprised when I actually see the models strut the looks down the runway, each turn of the corner more exciting than the next. The mix of neutrals, metallics, lace, and pops of bold colors were divine. There will undoubtedly be red carpet looks pulled from this collection. Helloooo Kitty: Sanrio Invades Art Basel

When I heard that the Sanrio Small Gift pop-up shop was coming to Miami for Art Basel I was beyond excited. The child and pop art lover in me were giddy with anticipation. To say that I was excited would have been a major understatement. As you will see by the pics, deliciousness was abound for the 50th anniversary celebration of the Sanrio gang.

The art was beyond what I expected.

Holiday Gift Guide: Gifts That Keep Giving

During the holiday season nothing seems more fitting than giving gifts that contribute to a cause and are still chic. Many designers and brands donate proceeds to different philanthropic causes, but what I love about these three items is that they are unique and each has a goal of empowerment.

Same Sky bracelets are made by Rwandan women who are HIV positive and survived the genocide. The purpose of Same Sky is to empower women and inspire a movement of women empowering women. Last, but certainly not least, on my list of amazing gifts that keep giving are Falling Whistles. In September I wrote a piece on Falling Whistles (see below) and I continue to be in awe of this unbelievable initiative and the incredibly stylish whistles that definitely make a great accessory. It has been two years since the two men with a passion for peace started this endeavour to save the children of the Congo. To date, there are 83 retailers carrying Falling Whistles, 25,000 whistleblowers across the globe, an advocacy office in Washington DC, and 3 rehabilitation partnerships in the Congo. Twitter is my favorite go-to for all the latest and today Reece Hudson (see post on her below) introduced her friend's new online retail website http://www.pinkclouds.com/. This site is the jackpot when it comes to designer vintage fashion. The retail website offers an edited collection of designer and fashion vintage pieces, including apparel, shoes, jewelry, and accessories. My next splurge will be on this site and I am eyeing a Givenchy shirt dress.

Falling Whistles: An Accessory For Peace

In the Republic of Congo children who should be starting elementary school and enjoying childhood are at the front lines of a war that rages on in the Congo. These boys can't carry rifles, so they are given whistles and are first in the line of fire. This seems outrageous, but it happens and Falling Whistles is a non-profit creating awareness with the hopes of saving these innocent children and bringing peace to this war torn land.

The Shaping of American Fashion

In anticipation of the upcoming exhibit at the Met's Costume Institute called American Women: Fashioning a National Identity, I began digging up my some of my favorite style icons that have influenced American fashion. These women will always represent the epitome of class and femininity to me. Fashion has always played an integral role in the lives of women though war, suffrage, and sexual liberation.
The exhibition runs from May 5 to August 15, 2010. If you are in NYC this summer definitely check it out. There will be pieces on display that have not been in the public eye for thirty years.

Love, Life, and Loss.

It has been a few weeks since I posted on the blog. This month was quite challenging for me, between my grandmother's passing and finals at school, my plate was completely full. My grandmother passed away April 9th and I am still trying to get it together. Like many grandmothers, mine had to play the role of mother while my mother was getting her life together. She helped shape who I am today. There are actually very few things about me that are not connected to her. My love of fashion, art, cooking, socializing, shopping, being a mother, NYC - all come from her. She was a force and could be frightening, but she was an amazing mother, grandmother, wife, sister, and friend. My grandparents were married for almost 55 years when my grandfather passed away in 2008. They did not speak the same language when they met in NYC (She was from the Dominican Republic and he was from Switzerland), but they managed and built a wonderful life in a new country. My grandparents are together now resting in eternity and I am so grateful for being a part of their lives.

The inevitable part of getting older is losing your parents or grandparents. The thing about life is that no matter what, it goes on. When I was younger I could never imagine a day when my grandmother wasn't here, now that that time is upon me, all I can do is go forward in love and grace. My wish for everyone is that you cherish your loved ones and never hold back showing love or appreciation. In the big picture our time together is so short, cherish every second.

On my radar this week are the gorgeous handbags by Reece Hudson. Based out of New York City, Reece Solomon creates handcrafted handbags that are an exceptional mix of luxury and edgy street style. Catching Up With Custo Dalmau From Custo Barcelona

One of the highlights of Fashion Miami for me was meeting Custo Dalmau half of the Dalmau duo behind Custo Barcelona. The design house had just showed at New York Fashion Week a few weeks before and was at it again in Miami. I asked the extremely talented Custo what made him decide to show again in Miami, and Dalmau stated that Miami has always been so supportive of their work and that it is like a second home. The designer describes the Fall 2010 collection, dubbed "Hairy Metal", as reflective of the elements and almost scientific in combination. It is the right mix of metallic elements (silver, gold, copper, bronze, steel), graphics, and colored fake fur to add contrast. The Custo Barcelona design house has always pushed the envelope, and this Fall line is no different, bringing out individuality and the newness of an evolving line.

The duo from Spain will without a doubt continue to be a force in contemporary fashion and it was a joy to see their art in person.

On my radar this week is myshoes.com, an online shopping source for us shoe aficionados. The site states "Who says you can't buy love?", in regards to shoes I completely agree. This new online shopping platform allows shoe-lovers to shop and save in one easy-to-compare place. A shopper can find their shoe of choice at the best price from hundreds of stores. Myshoes.com has a partnership with the discount coupon site PromotionalCodes.com, offering a unique coupon integration, which combines the store’s listed price with any coupon codes available so the “price after coupon” instantly appears. This means savings that you may not find otherwise. Hello! Savings in addition to convenient personal shoe shopping, love that. There are other sites that allow you to comparison shop, but myshoes.com adds the savings and additional personal style options. I do most of my shopping online these days, so not having to check a dozen sites sounds good.

To try the site out I placed an order (On a side note, not all of the shoes have a code offered for savings, which is understandible if it is a new style). I ordered the cute shoes pictured here and I saved a little over $12 with the coupon code. Plus the store offered free shipping, not bad.

Fashion Miami - A Review of The Runway

This week I had the privelage of attending Fashion Miami presented by Chrysler, which began with Gen Art Fresh Faces which included some great new talent, and ended with the always brilliant Custo Barcelona. Gen Art’s Fresh Faces in Fashion introduced me to Romina Heighes, her use of color and amazing fabrics for her Fall 2010 line was well done and refreshing. The showcased designs by students from MIUAD were impressive and imaginative. Talent was definitely abound in the tent in Miami.
In addition to clothing there were amazing accessory designers, H. Lucas Mejia was a FGI competition winner and rightly so, his work is show stopping. Get familiar with him http://www.mejiadesigns.com/.
The last two nights of Fashion Miami brought out established designers that showed jaw-dropping collections, my favorites; Silvia Tcherassi, Eco designer Elizabeth Calderon, Gustavo Cadile, and Custo Barcelona.

Outside of the tent I attended a BRPR Group event at their client Anya Ponorovskaya's Design District boutique. I posted a piece on Anya's new boutique in February and I must say I am still head over heels in love with her collection. I had a great time and I was thrilled to finally meet the fab people from BRPR Group.

Women Power - International Women's Day

Is it absurd to have an International Women's Day? Supermodel Waris Dirie thinks so, she says "Every day, women move mountains. It is an insult to have an international women's day," Dirie told Reuters. I agree that women are daily warriors, but I still think a day that globally celebrates women is beautiful. On a daily basis I am so impressed by the quiet strength and courage women everywhere exude. I for one try to appreciate women and our various accomplishments and even struggles as often as possible. Women have such power and many of do not even know it. Life can be tumultuous and often unforgiving, as little girls we are not taught to be ready for the things we go through. At least I wasn’t. But, that is life, we learn as we live and grow. One of the most important things we can do as women is to empower other women and girls. We do not need to keep giving our power away, which happens out of insecurity and approval-seeking. It also happens when we pit women against women, treating each other as competition instead of sisters. It takes a village and women especially should be able to lean on each other. I am guilty of thinking I can do everything by myself, but the fact of the matter is we all need help.
In the fashion industry I love seeing people like Diane Von Furstenberg and Kelly Cutrone, two outrageously strong and successful women, making it a priority to show women compassion and guidance. I love seeing a guidepost for younger girls in women like Diane and Kelly and so many more. We live in a global society, and what happens to women in every country is relevant to the future of this world.
Respect other woman, encourage other women, love other women, and we will make strides together in to the future.

For this style file I wanted to focus on dresses in nude tones. I love the combination of nude and black, the black adds an edge. Even if you stick to an all nude pallet, adding metallic accessories would be a great way to add some contrast to the look. Check out these lovely dresses...and shoes.

Behind The Fashion - A Look At Gerard Bush

An aspect of the fashion industry that has always fascinated me is editorial. If a fashion magazine has a well-designed cover and/or editorial spread it can evoke emotion and transcend moods, in turn “selling” the clothes and the magazine (which is the objective). A great Creative Director can translate ideas into imagery seamlessly. Gerard Bush is one of those great cutting-edge Creative Director's. Gerard is the in-house Creative Director and a partner at the brpr Group in Miami. As a fashion PR firm, the BRPR Group is innovative and forward-thinking, and Gerard Bush’s direction reflects that style. When I first saw Gerard's work I was blown away. Gerard and the brpr Group are bringing the fashion industry to another level in Miami and the world. Fabulous Finds: Splurge vs. Steel

The Burberry Gabardine Knotted Epaulette Trench coat has been on my radar for some time, but it is a bit too pricey for me. So, when Refinery29 showed a lower priced version of the trench I was ecstatic. The steel is a Lipsy Ruched Shoulder trench from http://www.asos.com/ that retails at $128.21. This discovery made me look into a couple other pieces that I have been coveting. Check out my finds below.

When I first saw the Emanuel Ungaro asymmetrical leather jacket (below, left) I almost fell out of my chair. The jacket is stunning, but so is the price tag. I set out to find a similar style and I think I did ok (well, minus the magnificent yellow color). The Emanuel Ungaro jacket retails for $1905 on http://www.net-a-porter.com/. The steel is a 3/4 sleeve leather jacket by bebe that retails for $198 at http://www.bebe.com/.

Anya Ponorovskaya: The Ultimate GirlCat

In January, Anya Ponorovskaya, the extremely talented New York City luxury women’s wear designer, opened up one of her fabulous boutiques in Miami’s Design District. Anya's designs are such a breath of fresh air and her collection is so chic and timeless. Her signature A-line reversible dress has become a must-have item. As a designer that has had a well established presence in New York City for twelve years, it was only natural for her to spread her wings, and where better than Miami's booming Design District.

Never Judge A Book By Its Cover

When I first saw Kelly Cutrone from Peoples Revolution on "The Hills", my first thought was 'this woman doesn't take anyone’s crap, I want to be like that!' Last night I finished reading her book If You Have To Cry Go Outside: And Other Things Your Mother Never Told You. Let me first say that I will not gush about anything unless it resonates with me and I truly love it. I could not stop reading the book, I downloaded the e-book at 6pm and I was done by 9 pm. Kelly's story and no non-sense advice for everything from self discovery to fashion career advice was so refeshing and inspiring.

A lot of what influences women’s decisions in life is based on preconceived notions of what we are "supposed" to be or pressures from parents or other people. Living a life that is not authentic to who you really are will eventually lead to a breakdown, which is what happened to Kelly and it happened to me. Kelly points out that in order to be your true self (and successful) you need to be fearless. In the book Kelly says "Because if you're the kind of person who senses there's something out there for you beyond whatever it is you're expected to do - if you want to be extra-ordinary - you will not get there by hanging around a bunch of people who tell you you're not extraordinary. Instead, you will probably become as ordinary as they expect you to be." This dear reader is quite a fantastic piece of advice and from a woman who has been there and done that. When someone with such valuable experience is giving advice, we should listen and take note.

I highly recommend this book to young women, but young or not so young, you will feel inspired. In life we need the truth, even it is not pretty, it is necessary. Kelly tells it like it is.

The New Kid On The Block

Can you imagine being 21 years old, showing your first collection at NYFW, and editor-at-large for Vogue magazine Andre Leon Talley shows up along with a mob of press and buyers? That is the story of LaQuan Smith, who has been on the "who to watch list" for this season at NYFW. LaQuan had gained recognition designing pieces for Lady Gaga, Rhianna, and Ciara, but showcasing his "Water Goddess" collection at NYFW has put him at a whole other level. I first read about LaQuan last April and I was so impressed by his determination, drive and humility. He is self-taught, FIT denied him twice, he sews all his pieces out of his bedroom in Queens, and on a limited budget. I love that LaQuan never gave up on his dream, he kept pushing forward. On Monday at the show Andre Leon Tally was overheard saying "Michelle! Tell everyone about this, he needs to be in stores!" That is exciting! A Posh Fitting?

When I think of Victoria Beckham, I do not think of a Celeb designer that helps her customers select a pair of jeans and continues assisting in the fitting room, but that is exactly what she did. Last night VB was previewing her Denim and Sunglasses collection at Bergdorf Goodman in New York City, and reports are that she was assisting customers with style selection and fittings. How great is that! It shows her authenticity and dedication to her collection. On Saturday VB showed her collection of dresses and like I mentioned in my NYFW post, the dresses were breathtaking. I am now an official lover of all things VB and I look forward to seeing more from her in the future.

New York Fashion Week Fall '10

It's New York Fashion Week! My favorite time of the year, minus the crappy weather. The designers I have been able to see so far had amazing collections; ADAM, Mackage, Diane Von Furstenberg, Christian Siriano, Luca Luca, and Marc Jacobs. There are still three more days of shows and more fabulous collections to come, so there will most likely be a part two to this posting. A couple trends I have noticed so far, that we will be seeing more of, is long hemmed skirts and duck/work style heeled boots. Tommy Hilfiger is showing a thigh-high heeled duck boot that will have people talking. Two designers whose collections floored me were Victoria Beckham and Marc Jacobs. I knew that Victoria Beckham would show nice pieces, but I wasn't expecting such well designed dresses. VB showed to an intimate group on Saturday and the dresses were in gorgeous colors and nude tones, plus a VB staple, super high platforms by Brian Atwood. I was taken aback by the structure and detail of the dresses. I can't wait to see her sunglasses and denim collection on Tuesday. Marc Jacobs was transcending! The collection was effortless and sophisticated. The clothes were 30's and 40's inspired in muted tones. Over the rainbow was playing and it was almost like an homage to post WWII and depression era fashion, somber yet optimistic. There was a fantastic three piece suit (pictured below), plus a few Dorothy (Wizard of Oz)inspired looks with socks and Maryjanes.

RIP Alexander McQueen

On the morning of February 11th the fashion world suffered an immense loss. The sudden death of the brilliant designer Alexander McQueen sent ripples around the world, not just through the fashion industry. It was not a mystery that Alexander McQueen was dark in his designing and even in his manner. It did come as a shock that he allegedly commited suicide. I can not help but think of the heart-break this extremely talented and complex man was going through. He just loss his mother, he and his long-time lover broke up a few weeks ago, and for any human these events are overwhelming. It is such a sad and unfortunate turn of events in a brilliant man's life.
There is talk in the fashion industry about what will happen to the Alexander McQueen brand, but this will come to light soon enough. For now, we mourn and remember what a ground-breaking and extaordinary designer Alexander McQueen was and make sure that his legacy will live on.

Oh Sales! Oh My!

Oh how I love TJ Maxx, let me count the ways. Well the most recent reason is due to finding a pair of Rock and Republic jeans (original retail $185) for $60. They are the dark wash and straight leg "Stella" style, which I love. The key was taking a slow and patient look through the huge clearance section. I patiently looked through a wild assortment of pants on clearance, and sure enough there they were in all their discounted splendor. Every TJ Maxx store receives different inventory weekly (each store varies), so a good trick is shopping weekdays (preferably days) and with a ton of patience. I know so many people get overwhelmed at the idea of shopping off-retail stores (i.e. TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Ross etc). The overload of clothes and not-so-organized manner of display in some stores can be much, but if style on a budget is your goal, take a deep breath and jump in. I am positive you will find deals that will amaze you. Elise Loehnen the editor at large of Lucky Magazine put together some tips for shopping sales and off-retail stores. I am going to emphasize something she says, not picking up something for the price, definitely try things on (if you can) and make sure you love it. Then it is a good find.

On another note, I was thrilled to find out that the CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America) has organized Fashion for Haiti. T-shirts will be going on sale February 16th across the country at various stores and the proceeds will go to the ClintonBush Haiti fund, which is raising funds for immediate, high impact relief and long-term recovery efforts in Haiti. Yeah! I love when Fashion and philanthropy come together, especially for such a needy cause. The t-shirts will retail for $25. Hello World!

Have you ever wondered why we spend so much time waiting? In life, we wait for love, we wait for a break or an opportunity, we wait in line, we are always waiting for something. The past couple years has taught me that if you can just be still and quiet while you wait, you just might find something out about yourself and become a better version of you. I know that I have put myself into to the worst of situations not wanting to wait and wanting things or situations to occur NOW. Once you have worked on a goal or a dream, when all the ground work is laid out, sometimes you just have to wait. It is my favorite part of Dr. Seuss' book "Oh, The Places You'll Go!", the waiting room, where everyone is just waiting. My life is one-hundred and eighty degrees from where it was this time two years ago and had I not just sat still and waited I might not be in this marvelous place emotionally, spiritually, and physically. A dream of mine was to start a blog, but I had no clue what to write or how to start. I re-entered school over the last year and taking an English course started my writing juices flowing. So as far as my blog is concerned, the wait is over. Here it is and I am ready to roll...
